Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed a Biological Science practice test that we reviewed in detail. The passage topics included genetics of ABO blood grouping, yeast genetics, and mutation experiments. Based on these passages, she was able to gain confidence on concepts such as co-dominance, effects of recessive alleles on blood clumping, effects of independent genes on blood antigens (secretion), meiosis, wild-type phenotype rescue, and haploid cell fusion."
"Since our last session the student has worked through a number of practice passages in both biology and physics."
"Did some more sample verbal reasoning passages at the start of the session. Spent the remainder of the session doing practice problems on light and optics. The student is pretty close to completing the material, so planning on beginning practice exams."
"Today the student and I went through Rate Laws, Equilibrium, and Acid/Base Chemistry. I even added several problems from a textbook I like to work from. We finished Acid/Base."
"We briefly reviewed topics previously covered in waves, including velocity, wavelength, frequency, standing waves, interference, and how wave functions classify simple harmonic motion. We then hit the last topic of waves: the Doppler effect. The student's book presented simple equations for the Doppler effect that I asked him to memorize. We also discussed the theory behind the changing frequencies of the Doppler effect. We then began discussing electricity. Electric force, fields, and potential energy were all related to their gravitational counterparts as analogies for how electricity works. Electric potential is difficult to define relative to gravity, and so I told him that I would get back to her with a good definition of potential next time."
"The student and I completed passages in the prep book on aldol condensation, carbonyl chemistry, respiratory system, MSK, and the reproductive system. Overall, she did well in almost all of the biology topics with just a bit of difficulty in the more advanced passages that concerned the reproductive system. He understood that he needs to refresh his knowledge on this topic, and he agreed to this as well."
