Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on a sample test. The student's class is doing advanced mechanism problems and we worked through several examples. We did some acetoacetic ester synthesis problems. I will send an additional problem set and a solved mechanism problem."
"We covered addition reactions of alkenes, introduction to organic synthesis, reactions to create epoxides, reactions of epoxides, mechanisms, stereochemistry, and selectivity."
"Today we worked on practice questions from the first chapter of the student's book. We covered translating structural formulas into Lewis structures and vice versa. We also covered resonance hybrids, and how to identify their major and minor contributors. In the process we reviewed general rules for stability. He says our session today solidified the concepts for him. We will meet at the same time next week, and plan on reviewing chapters two and three."
"We went over carbohydrate organic chemistry this session. We reviewed Fisher projections and how to draw 5 and 6 membered sugars. It took us a while to go over this since it seems to be a very complex concept, however, the student understood it in the end."
"We discussed the stability of cycloalkanes. We talked about the reasons cyclohexane is more stable than the other cycloalkanes. We then went on to discuss the different chair conformations of cyclohexane and how to determine which one of the conformations would be the most stable."
"Today, I met with the student, and we went over the theory behind proton NMR spectroscopy. I discussed with her briefly about the theory behind NMR (nuclear spin, applied magnetic field, shielding/deshielding), as well as how we can utilize NMR readouts to give information about protons and their environments (the locations of protons with respect to functional groups that remove electron density, the effect of vicinal hydrogens causing signals to split, and the magnitude of the signal indicating the number of hydrogens in equivalent environments). She had a series of practice problems that she had emailed me a few days prior to our meeting. Together, we worked through some of these problems, and I helped her deduce the structure of the molecules using clues given by the molecular structure of the molecule and NMR signals."
