Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has a test on derivatives coming up, so we worked a bunch of review problems. Some of the problems actually got really involved. The derivatives took several steps, and some difficult algebra, but we got through it. She needed a bit of help with some of the concepts, but I think she should be ready now. She also wanted to work a bit more on her AP test-prep packet. The concepts for several of the problems were the same ones she'll use on the test, so I think it helped."
"We covered integration and reverting the graph, of a differentiated function back to a graph of its original. The student seemed to have a tiny bit of trouble but got through the chapter nonetheless. He will be able to improve his grade significantly, if he puts in study time of the material."
"The student and I started doing integrals today. She needed help when it came to trigonometric functions, but after explaining the unit circle further, she had a better grasp on it. We also found average values of functions over certain intervals using integration. She has a test tomorrow and I'm confident that she is ready! She has been doing great."
"We looked at integration problems, in particular substitution and average-value problems. We also discussed some SAT math problems, since the student is taking the test on Saturday and wanted to review a little."
"In this session we reviewed the chain rule and studied implicit differentiation, equation of the tangent line, and related rates. The student showed a solid understanding of the material as she solved the problems I assigned to her quite easily. We covered the concepts and did a couple of examples."
"Student and I checked her work on a quiz she took, on challenging systems of linear equations and solutions to those systems She handled them very well. Then we moved into problems over graphing linear inequalities. With more practice she should be able to move through them more easily."
"Student and I went over about a dozen theorems that he will have to know for his geometry final. More importantly, I showed him a method of studying that should help as he prepares. If he keeps a section of his notebook devoted to theorems, which he then applies to his practice problems, I think he'll do well."
"Today, we covered higher level algebra II topics & introduced trigonometry. We did radicals and their conjugates (i.e. removing the radical from the denominator of a term), equations of circles (and how to factor them), summations, sequences/series, and the basic unit circle for trigonometry. I would do an example and explain the material, and then we would do a few practice problems--he took to everything very quickly."
"Student and I went over math and science this session. For science, we went over the 6 kingdoms and prepared a study guide she can use on the test. For math, we went through a packet that covered the volume and area of prisms. She had a good grasp of the material. Overall, I have high confidence in her work for her finals."
"We worked on reviewing for the final exam. Our efforts focused on the topic of sketching graphs by using information gained from the first and second derivatives. As far as the actual calculus goes, she seemed to have a good handle on what information that was important and how to obtain that information."
"Today the student and I did a general review of his year of math. We spent most of our time on the multiplication and division of fractions and the laws of area and volume. Daniel's issues mostly stemmed from small arithmetic errors, not a lack of understanding of the concepts being discussed. I gave him some helpful pointers on the things he was having trouble with, and some practice problems to do."
"Review for the final: solving systems of linear equations, graphing inequalities, factoring, simplifying expressions, graphing complex functions, domain and range, inverse functions, logarithms, interest formulas, stats."
