Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was our first session. The student said she knew her stuff, but her tests do not show that. I noticed that she struggles the most with open-ended paragraph-style questions because she has to form her own sentences, which I noticed she sometimes had trouble doing. Some sentences would not be complete, and sometimes she seemed a bit hesitant in collecting her thoughts. We first reviewed her latest test and talked about Lewis structures, valence electrons, and molecular shapes. She did well with molecular shapes but needed a reminder for the other two subjects. Then we talked about intermolecular forces, especially related to evaporation rates. Then, we addressed polarity of molecules. The student is open to learning and after some explanation, she got the concepts. We then moved on to balancing equations and reviewing the types of reactions. She got those concepts pretty quickly, which was great! I told her to review what we went over today and to contact me if she had any questions."
"Today, the student and I went over molarity concepts as the last unit of the chapter on solutions. We worked on problems on her homework to reinforce this concept. We also reviewed old concepts of solubility and water properties to help prepare for her exam on Wednesday. She seemed at ease with this material and didn't struggle in doing any of the problems."
"In anticipation of completing the chapter 8/9 assessment, a brief review of VSEPR theory, hybridization, molecular geometry, bond angles, and polyatomic ions was covered. The balance of the lesson moved on to new material in chapter 11, inclusive of the five major classes of chemical reactions, balancing equations, net ionic equations, and predicting if a chemical reaction will occur."
"In this session, we worked through practice problems on current, current density, and resistance. The student is doing well with this subject so far, so I gave her some guidance on math concepts but she was able to succeed largely on her own. To push her understanding a little farther, I directed her to some proof-type questions that were not assigned and helped her construct complete justifications in that context."
"The student and I reviewed equilibrium concentrations of chemical reactions. These include but are not limited to forward and reverse reactions. I have sent the student a worked out problem to review."
"Today we worked more on his extra credit assignment. This assignment covers a wide range of chemistry, so it was good to go over a lot of different subjects in chemistry. I tried not to focus too much on the harder stuff and let him work most on the questions that improve his basic chemistry knowledge."
