Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I started going over the review for her math final. A lot of the material she remembers when she looks at it and doesn't need to go over, but a few things she doesn't really remember and we go over them. It's just a question of reinforcing certain rules again, as the arithmetic is the same, but sometimes inequality signs flip, or absolute value signs go away at the end and add an extra step. She is going to finish the unit reviews and figure out what we need to focus on for next time."
"We worked on rotational mechanics. This included finding the force of gravity between 2 objects, finding torque, and centripetal acceleration/forces. We also worked on statements such as "if this doubles, how does it effect that." These questions were challenging for the student."
"I introduced her to decimals. I explained how decimals are parts of a whole and the different places to the right of the decimal (tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.), and related the different places to the fractions. I taught her how to add, subtract, and multiple decimals. She has issues placing the decimal in the final answer of a multiplication problem. We then moved into division without the remainder, i.e. adding a decimal and zeroes to yield a decimal answer. She had no problem solving the division problems that yielded decimal answers. I also introduced the concept of indivisible decimals and zeroes in whole numbers."
"The student and I discussed Algebra 2 Honors material in preparation for his semester exam next week. I cleared up some confusion about relations and functions, inverse functions, parent graphs and transformations. He mentioned he was at a 91% for both AP Stats and Algebra 2 Honors. The final exam counts for 20% of the semester grade. The student is going to let me know if he needs extra practice with matrix operations and linear programming before our next session Tuesday."
"Continued work on her Final Review packet. In addition, we covered a specific Unit for a make up test tomorrow, which focused on proportions. There was a lot of improvement from our last session, as she was able to approach each problem herself, and set things up correctly for the most part. As long as she slows down, and takes her time, she should do fine. For her Final Review, we covered triangle side/angle relationships."
"Today, we began working on probability. The main focus was on tree diagrams and simple probability applications. We used the tree diagrams to find the total number of possible outcomes."
"The student and I went over parabolas again, and we went over her worksheet that she had due tomorrow that had an emphasis on working with height of an object flying off the ground and gravity acting on it. We also went over a review sheet she had that covered the material on her Monday's test"
"We continued where we left off last time, reviewing multiplying and dividing fractions. The student has a test on this tomorrow, so we went over more problems to prepare him for the exam. He seems to feel a lot more comfortable with this now. We also went over his last test, which included adding and subtracting decimals. He's very good at the addition."
"We went over questions the student had from doing the practice finals today. We then covered topics such as volumes using the shell/washer methods, determining the interval of convergence of a power series, and computing error in Taylor series. I gave a few tips for doing well on the final as well."
"The student has a math test tomorrow, so we went over the review sheet her teacher gave her, and did some supplemental problems in her textbook. She seems very solid on the material and should do very well on the test. She has gotten much better at writing neatly and writing every step."
"The student did not have any questions about his classwork, so we spent the session working on timed exercises in the SAT exam prep book. She completed two timed sections; One on Arithmetic and one on charts an graphs. W went over those an then I assigned him two follow-up sections for extra practice."
"The student has a semester final next week so we covered a chapter 7 cumulative practice test. We worked on binomial calculations of probability. She got her highest score so far on her last test, which her instructor said was the hardest test so far, so this is encouraging for her. I've scheduled an extra session for Monday, the day before her final."
