"We played games that focus on the skills of number recognition, number comparison, and weighing items."
"I created two multiplication worksheets for the student to work while timed for one minute. I needed to asses how fast he was computing and on which facts he was having the most problems. It took eight trials to finish the two worksheets. Together, the student and I looked at the specific multiplication facts with which he was having the most difficulty. We discussed that we will focus on these specific facts to improve his overall score. When he is responding more accurately, we will work on timing. The student gets math homework to do when he makes under a 98%. His homework is to write the multiplication facts down repeatedly. However when the student writes the facts he writes the top number across his page then the multiplication sign and bottom number, then he goes across his page writing the line and answer. I explained to the student the purpose of repetitive writing of multiplication fact was to help him learn the fact and answer. I asked him to write out each problem at a time when he receives this homework so he can learn his facts more quickly. I also gave visuals with funny words to help him remember his facts. We talked about mnemonics and how they can help recall a math fact. I also pulled up on my iPad multiplication game sites. I showed him a number of different sites that he could choose to practice his time tables. The sites are in game form and will also help him memorize his facts. I talked to mom about having him play the games 15 minutes per day and if he enjoys then longer. Mom agreed to make the time for him to play the multiplication games."
"The student practiced fraction skills, completed 10 word problems, and reviewed rounding to the nearest dollar. We also practiced adding and subtracting decimals."
"Our work focused on fractions and multiplication table memorization. We completed one classroom worksheet and did numerous examples of basic addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator. Our next session is scheduled for Thursday of next week."
"We reviewed for the student's test on clocks and telling time. Then we reviewed for her spelling test. I had her write the words she missed five times each while spelling the words out loud at the same time. She was apprehensive at first but when we did a final review she spelled all of the words correctly."
"I'm happy to say that today the student and I were able to complete his math textbook. He is very bright and grasps concepts very quickly. I also appreciate his mental math skills, as he very rarely relies on using a calculator for computations. After finishing chapter 7, we completed the chapter review and word problems from his workbook. We also got to work with a few critical thinking problems and discuss those. We left our session on the chapters 5-7 review and will pick up from there on our next session."
