Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I met for the first time and she talked to me about what she has been working on in math class, as well as some things that may be on her final in a few weeks. We worked on adding and subtracting fractions as well as dealing with negative integers. She had a great grasp on everything. Next session, we will probably focus on whatever new concepts are introduced in her class next week."
"We went over a worksheet which consisted of writing equations in standard, vertex, and factored form. The student is doing very well, but she occasionally needs a little guidance on how to start a problem. Once she knows how to start it, she finishes the problem with ease."
"When the student feels uncomfortable with a problem, he avoids checking the answer and the solution in order to get over with it and move as quickly as possible to a more comfortable problem. Instead of working to expand his comfort zone, I am working to help him accept that it is OK to feel uncomfortable with a hard problem, it is OK to make mistakes, and that it is from challenges that one really learns."
"We covered the chapter on Statistics, Module 9. I pulled up the chapter review on my computer and we worked our way through the chapter. We reviewed the concepts and the examples and I gave her some clarification on a few things. For next time, I asked her to finish the review I sent over and read through the sections that aren't covered in the review. Next time is our last session, so we will review the test and I'll answer any questions she has."
"Today, we completed the student's two brainstorming paragraphs. One, we began last week, and was on the topic of life without television. The second paragraph was about what makes the student sad. Then, we completed the student's work in preparation for their origami end of the year project."
"We went over the benchmark 16 review sheet which was about simplifying expressions with exponents in them. The student grasped the concept well and we finished the review sheet in just over an hour. For the second half of the time I made up problems and focused more on the skills he was struggling with (negative number operations which we have continuously been working on). He told me he took benchmark 20 today at school and it went well--he will know if he passed on Monday. We will go over the next benchmark tomorrow and will continue to review this one to make sure it stays fresh in his mind for Monday."
