"Monday was the student's 9th Geometry tutoring session. He did an excellent job pushing ahead of his class and moving into the next few sections in the curriculum. Specifically, he practiced several problems where he had to plot points on a coordinate plane, use the distance formula to find the lengths of line segments, classify the shape formed by connecting the dots, and calculate the perimeter and area of the resulting shape. Some of the shapes were made up of multiple polygons. Great work! Additionally, he had to find the geometric probability of a random point landing in the shaded region of a given shape. He was able to visually connect the amount of the shape that was shaded compared to the rest of the shape with the percent he achieved when calculating the probability, so his answers made sense to him. Finally, he was able to estimate the area of curved shapes by sketching polygons inside and outside the given shape and calculating the total areas of these polygons. Once again, he is able to persist through the most challenging problems involving several steps and making connections from different concepts in Algebra and PreAlgebra. Excellent work!"
"Today we finished going over Chapter 8 (areas of polygons) in preparation for the test tomorrow. We finished sections 8.58.7 together. These are the more complicated sections of the chapter on areas of parallelograms, trapezoids, and circles. This chapter was more challenging for him than prior chapters. At the end of the session I had him compile notes of all the different formulas he will be using on his test. Tomorrow morning he will complete a practice test as final preparation to make sure he is clear on all the information."
"We reviewed triangle congruence by SSS, SAS, and ASA today. I started by having the student to a problem set in which he needed to identify if the triangle pair could be proved congruent, by which postulate, and to name the two triangles according to their corresponding parts. After this I had him do a couple of proofs. He was able to do these as well. After this we went over proofs that use congruent triangles as a means to an end by continuing and using other corresponding parts of the triangle after the triangles have been proven congruent. I advised him to work backward from the last step and figure out what theorem is needed and which sides or angles need to be congruent to use the theorem, and use that to figure out which triangles he should set out to prove congruent at the outset. He did a good job planning proofs and thinking about his last steps before beginning. I gave him homework on this skill as well as a review minitest to do for next lesson."
"The student is preparing to take a test tomorrow on circles and parabolas. As always, she was very prepared for our session with what she already knew and questions she had. I gave her practice on using completing the square to get the standard form of a parabola and then find the vertex, directrix, focus, and p. She was able to do the problem well. The other questions she had were about finding the second intersection point between two circles using symmetry given one of the intersection points, and I was able to answer her questions and clarify the concept for her. Overall, I think she is very prepared for her test."
"The student and I reviewed his homework on genetics. Topics included: Punnett squares, genotype, phenotype, allele, dominant, recessive, Mendel, etc. His homework was error free. Next, we reviewed a geometry assignment online (no textbook). This was comprised of problems utilizing the Pythagorean theorem, arcs, angles, etc. He completed the assignment with 12/13 correct. After completing the homework, he expressed understanding of the material and was actively engaged in the learning process throughout the session. I look forward to working with him again."
"We covered completing the square, solving an equation by completing the square and finding the vertex by translating a standard equation into vertex form. I provided the student with a folder study guide for these skills and the ones we will work on in our next session.
He is struggling most with identifying when he needs to use positive or negative signs (+ ). He needs to slow down and make sure he's not making minor mistakes. He worked really hard through several problems and we stopped when I realized he had reached capacity on taking in new knowledge. We decided to work on the other skills in our next session.
I don't think the student had enough practice. I encouraged him to give himself additional practice problems to internalize the steps. He has a good understanding of the concepts. The additional practice will help to make his process more fluid."
