"I helped the student with a few of his tensile stress problems. I just showed him the thought process behind solving the equations and knowing how the terms relate to each other. I also advised him to solve for the thing you are looking for first, and then plug in the numbers. If he has the problems set up, he has no trouble getting the correct answer or understanding the concepts along with that problem."
"The student was finishing preparations for his physics exam tomorrow, covering mainly geometric (imaging) optics. We went over problems with reflection, refraction, plane mirrors, spherical mirrors, and lenses. There was a lot of ground to cover, but I think he had some good practice with it."
"Today we covered concepts related to evolution. It was primarily going through the book and having me explain concepts and vocabulary terms that the student was unclear on. Some topics of note were the types of microevolution, particularly genetic drift, how to read a phylogenetic tree, Darwin and his work, species concepts, and molecular clocks. I made note of particular concepts and relationships she might want to make note of, such as parsimony, the flaws in the species concepts, or problems with molecular clocks. She expressed a little concern at the breadth of material, though she already had good knowledge of many of the terms we covered. I recommended doing the chapter concept checks and 'test your understanding' questions from the book. I also sent her some practice application questions on microevolution that I took from one of my old tests. I also sent her a link to some Hardy-Weinberg practice problems (though she expressed more confidence with those)."
"We talked mostly about strategy for the upcoming semester and how we are going to tackle both studying for new material and reviewing material for last semester. It seems the student is struggling most with effective ways for preparing for tests. She is a very bright student and understands the concepts well, but has difficulty retaining the information on test day. Her attitude was very determined and incredibly self-aware. She is aware of the work that is required of her to excel. We worked on studying strategies, including how to read the textbook, taking notes and making outlines for upcoming tests. We also went over some test strategies like predicting the answer before looking at the responses. I gave her some work for the next week, focusing on last semester's material. I can already tell that she is an excellent student to tutor because she is willing to put in the effort and understands where her weaknesses are."
"We covered thermochemistry and algebraic functions, including logarithms and exponents. The student had prepared all of her material, so she was ready to go and followed very nicely."
"We worked together on the student's homework questions. The topics covered were part of the genetics unit. Overall, she understood the material."
