Elementary (Kindergarten - 5th Grade Academic Tutoring)

Middle School (6th – 8th Grade) Academic and Test Prep Tutoring
Middle school is a time of transition and change for all students. Varsity Tutors understands the importance of preparing students to meet more challenging academic standards and helping them to prepare for the upcoming rigors of high school. We can connect you and your child with one-on-one, individualized tutoring for grades 6-8 in all academic subject areas, including foreign languages and executive functioning. Tutors are also available to help students prepare for high school entrance exams with test prep tutoring. Test prep tutoring includes comprehensive diagnostic testing and one-on-one, individualized instruction that identifies specific areas of need and comprehensively prepares students for their specific entrance exams. Both academic and test prep tutoring are done in the comfort of students’ own homes or other convenient locations.
Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
The student and I covered the closing process, preparing financial statements, post-close trial balance. I recommended she should review the process and know the processes. We'll work on that more in our next session.
We went over the student's online homework, which concerned solving systems of equations by substitution and elimination. We also worked on several word problems involving revenue, cost, and profit, which required setting up systems of equations to find break-even points.
We covered a lot of ideas relating to human geography. We talked about cities, and what it takes to sustain them. We talked about why different parts of the world are the way they are. Then, we talked about mining, waste management, and waste-water treatment. We discussed the history of colonization and imperial policies. Many topics are related and important to understand in order understand how cities function and provide what the people need. We discussed the consequences of hydroelectric dams and other energy sources.
We reviewed equilibrium and discussed Le Chatelier's principle in terms of concentration, heat, pressure, and volume changes to an equilibrium system. We then discussed solubility products with example problems for each topic.
The student worked on his science and math homework. We completed a cloze science activity where he had to fill in the correct words using a word bank. I looked over his math homework and he did well with it. We practiced a few math skills with fractions.
Today was the first session in which we discussed the first section of the assessment - the writing portion. I'm glad we brought this up now, as the student had great ideas for his response, but also needed support in putting his thoughts into words. We will continue to practice with the planning and implementation of the writing section in the coming weeks. We discussed drawing on prior knowledge for the writing section just as he does for the other sections of the test. We continued looking at overall assessment structure, times, and question numbers and he wisely paralleled the assessment with recent state standardized tests that the completed. After completing multiple reading passages and synonym verbal sections, he has shown increased comfort and ability for this test.
