Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did very well on her math homework. I suggested for her essay she provide 3 examples, look out for fragments, and put her examples in the intro. She did very well on her critical reading practice today. She also read a sample essay and worked on source summaries. She worked on laws of arithmetic and parallelism as well. I asked her to do source summaries and practice test 2 for homework."
"The student and I worked primarily on the essay section. We put together a rough outline of what should be included in the essay, and then he practiced writing an entire essay while I timed him. We'll work on strategies for speeding him up next session."
"The student and I went over the math sections on the SAT Reasoning test as well as the SAT Math level 1 subject test. We looked at questions she had previously done and either left blank or gotten incorrect as well as new questions."
"Continued with our comprehensive look at the English section's usage and mechanics, including subject-verb agreement, pronoun use, modifiers, parallelism, grammatical voice, and idioms. We tried to move slowly and methodically to see the reasons for and applications of each rule. Moved on to 2 passages of guided practice; overall the student is acclimating to the section's expectations."
"We spent the time doing English practice questions together. We discussed sub-verb agreement, comma/colon usage, and idioms. He is definitely getting better and I think more practice is the key to further improvement."
"The student and I worked on more practice problems and also focused specifically on the data, probability, and statistics-based content areas. We worked through different types of multiple choice questions and worked on how to most efficiently process the different style of questions. Tomorrow we will move on to focus on free-response questions."
"Today we specifically went over the subjects that are found on the SAT math and writing sections of the test. I gave him one section of writing and math to do as homework to solidify the concepts."
"I met with the student for the last time before his exam. We did some more difficult questions in math, mostly in geometry and probability. He did well on the probability questions, but some very difficult geometry ones took some time. They were, however, more difficult than most normal SAT questions, so we also did an SAT section and he only missed one out of 18. We did an entire critical reading section as well, and he did quite well on the reading comprehension parts with only minor issues with vocabulary. It helps that he is currently preparing for the AP English exam as well, which normally has more difficult reading comprehension problems. After that, I gave him a few tips to prepare for the SAT and wished him luck."
"We covered a reading, grammar, vocab, and writing this session. The student concentrated much more diligently this session, and this focus showed in his improvement in both vocab and math. He needs to learn to slow down on the reading passages to ensure that he fully understands them before moving on to the questions. I encouraged him to continue practicing his vocab words up until test day."
"Today we focused on SAT math and SAT critical reading and vocabulary. The student struggled a bit with the vocabulary but understood it was both based on studying and being able to take words apart. She was noticeably faster with the math problems, and in critical reading was very quick to explain why a given answer was wrong in the process of elimination."
"Our final session before the test. I think she will perform well when placed in the actual test situation. We may meet again for brush up sessions if she needs to take the test again in October. An excellent student and a real pleasure to work with--she has a sense of humor, is motivated, and thinks on a high level."
"We worked on SAT math preparation. I gave her a to do list before the exam this Saturday, including tips on how to have a less stressful testing experience. We also worked on essay writing skills. She asked if I could tutor her for the ACT."
