"Chapter 2 . Slope of a Tangent Line, Derivative of a Function, Continuity of a Function, basic differentiation rules and rates of change. Homework: Exercise problems. For next time, study: product and quotient rules and higher order derivatives."
"Today we covered implicit differentiation and trigonometry. We covered more on chain rule and used it in implicit differentiation. Furthermore, we also covered derivatives of inverse trigonometric functions. In trigonometry, we learned how to simplify expressions involving a trigonometric function of an inverse trigonometric function. We drew triangles and used Pythagorean theorem to simplify the expression. Student was eager to learn the material. I asked student to use u substitution (not the one in integration) to apply chain rule. Student should memorize derivatives of both trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. He should also practice problems with product rule. Student is able to identify when it is necessary to use product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule."
"We started our session by going over some physics worksheets The student's teacher had given the class to review certain concepts. They dealt with the electromagnetic spectrum, calculating the speed of light, examining some properties of light, and the concept of polarization as it relates to filters. All of the questions from the worksheets were conceptual, so we went through them one by one and discussed what the answer to each question would be in words. After working on physics, we switched over to calculus and discussed one of his homework assignments. The problems all dealt with integration, some requiring u substitution and others knowledge of the properties of natural logs or the exponential function. He had no trouble working through the integrals, and quickly understood the steps of u substitution after they were explained to him."
"The student and I met to work towards her test. She was having some trouble with the simplifications of the equations. We went through ample examples throughout by looking into asymptotes and other graphs. She said that things were making much more sense than they were. If she can perform well on this test, she looks to strongly increase her grade!"
"During this session, I worked with the student to help her study for her math final. We reviewed the 4 chapter covered on her math test that were on her review sheet. This included properties of integers and rational numbers, ratios and proportions, decimals, fractions, percents, functions, and inequalities. We looked through her old tests and talked about the mistakes she made and made sure she understood how to work them correctly. We also worked through all the questions she had prepared before the session. She was feeling very confident by the end of the session."
"The student is continuing his probability unit. This time I gave him practice problems on Venn Diagrams and Sets, Two Way Frequency and Relative Tables, and Independent/Dependent Probabilities. Many of these were word problems, so it required applications of set theory. He had not worked on these types of problems before, but he was able to solve them easily. He was glad to have gotten exposure to it beforehand so he will do better on the final and homework."
