Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on finishing the student's "reflection" assignments, which included picking a topic she had learned about, making up a practice problem, and explaining it. She did very well and finished them all!"
"We went over sections during his classes that he didn't understand, including functions, trigonometric functions."
"The student is beginning to learn about sequences. In the beginning, I reviewed the idea of a basic sequence and we slowly went over simple sequences and how to solve for the formula necessary. I also went over a problem from her notes that used recursion. Once we went over the basics of sequences, we went over her homework problems. By the end of the session, the student said that she felt a lot more confident on the topic of sequences. We will continue to discuss this topic next session."
"Today, the student and I read the book Ponies on Ice and began working on a homemade book about ponies attending school. We reviewed key words in the story before reading and broke down the more challenging words. The student had a lot of energy today, but I let her move around while we worked, as long as she continued to focus on the task. Overall, she did really well and was able to read some words that are usually challenging for her with no problem."
"Before moving forward in Unit 11 (Linear Equations) in the K12 course, we reviewed the material from yesterday's session. The student wrote notes to use as a reference: the (x, y) plane, quadrants, positive and negative correlations (slopes), the equation of a line, a function "machine." I presented the point-slope form of line to support the curriculum. The student took the Practice and Graded Unit 11 final assessments of 17 questions each, scored 100% and 94% respectively. This Unit fluctuated from questions that were very difficult for the student (understandable by the use of the function "machine") to concepts he grasped quite easily. The student is fully able to make the calculations when he imagines x's going in and y's as answers coming out of the function "machine." He tried each test answer in the function until he discovered which is correct. Questions regarding points in the plane were answered after he plotted them himself on a graph. During testing, the student was confident, content and showed excellent understanding of the (x, y) plane, correlations, independent and dependent variables. After a break the student started Unit 12 Rates Lesson 1 Foundations where the use of a proportion to solve problems was reviewed. With support the student is very skilled at solving proportions. He has a stronger understanding of fractions and decimals since starting the course, and readily converts to decimals to make calculations easier. We reviewed a rule for writing proportions: units must be the same in the two fractions. When the student does not know how to proceed he can usually move forward by me asking relevant questions or indicating alternative approaches."
"We discussed Wednesday's Science and Reading Language Arts tests. Studied for Thursday's Math test. Completed Chapter 7 Review packet. Did practice problems and studied concepts of converting decimals, fractions, and percentages, as well as solving ratios, sales, markup, and sales tax problems. Studied how to answer principal and interest questions. Completed word problems involving bank accounts, restaurant bills, and store sales. Checked completed problems for accuracy and ensured that all were answered correctly. Complimented the student on his progress and encouraged him to go into the test with confidence."
