Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was the student's final session for her test the following day, so rather than introduce new material I thought it best I just give her a crack at a short practice test and see how well she could put to use the strategies we have explored the past several weeks. While she has made great strides with time management and solved the first half of the math section at a reasonable pace, she got stuck on many of the problems in the second half. On writing and critical reading, she was able to near the end of each section in the time limit; however, her solution ability was rather inconsistent compared to the math section. My best hope for her is that she will reach close to a 1500 for her overall SAT score."
"Suggestions: review equations for geometry, including the area of a triangle, area of a rectangle, volume of a rectangular prism, and surface area, as well as the number of degrees in different shapes (triangle, rectangles, squares...) She's quite quick to learn if she practices similar problems often. As she practices more, she will also begin to eliminate her simple errors and improve her speed!"
"The student did some SAT practice on her own (math) and didn't have any questions from that. We worked today from a previous SAT test released by CB and worked math practice questions (medium & hard). We reviewed concepts as needed and short and medium CR passages, focusing on summarizing author intent and structure. We also worked through a section of sentence improvement practice. She completed two sample essay outlines that I gave her feedback on."
"The student and I focused on doing difficult math questions covering geometry topics and exponents. We did a brief review of permutations and combinations as well. Also answered whatever last questions she had on the writing section. She was doing well on the reading section on her own."
"Today we covered, in depth, the Pythagorean theorem, right triangles, parallel lines, exponents, ratios and complicated binomial multiplication. The student had some trouble with the special triangles and with taking the square root of the number at the end of the Pythagorean theorem. Other than that she is picking up the relevant concepts fast and applying them well. We will meet again on Tuesday to discuss linear functions, graphs, and word problems. After that session the plan is to go over another practice test section to watch out for any more tricky problems."
"The student and I covered thermochemistry today. I went over some conceptual ideas regarding the first law of thermodynamics and how it was used as a basis for most thermodynamic calculations. I also explained the relationship between heat and entropy in Gibbs free energy. We did multiple problems on the topics of heat of formation, specific heat and heat capacity, heat of fusion, calculating heat required for temperature change, and Gibbs free energy. He seemed to grasp all of the topics we covered regarding the math."
"This was our final session. We finished the practice test we began last week and did about half of the second one, focusing on efficiency of answering problems. His grasp of the math is solid, but I recommended he review before he takes the test imaginary numbers and matrix algebra. I recommended he review both the SAT English sections that we haven't gone over recently and the math before he actually takes the tests. I had a great time working with the student overall."
"Material covered: SAT critical reading - passage maps, paired passages, sentence completion questions; SAT math - inequalities, integers; SAT writing - identifying sentence errors, improving sentences Extra practice: improving sentences questions, vocab words 1-10"
"The student and I worked through some function problems in Math today. We looked at inverse functions, nested functions, and Domain and Range functions. I asked him to keep working on flashcards for Friday."
"In today's session, we worked through the reading and math sections of the SAT study guide. The pupil has improved a lot in the math section since our last session; she has learned how to assess a problem and pick out the necessary information. We will continue to review such concepts as geometry, probability, and averages. Her ability with passages in the reading section is strong, so we will focus more on the vocab section. We have been reviewing common SAT vocab words when we encounter them in questions."
"The student continues to prepare for his assessment test. We focused on a new column of words from his workbook. He used the "checkmark, 1/2, and ?" system I created for identifying known and unknown words. He knew about half the words from the workbook and didn't know or sort of knew the other half. Next, we worked on quantitative reasoning, which he really likes. We focused on geometric shapes, percentages and fractions."
"We worked on speed and efficiency by answering timed math questions and focusing on strategies for managing time and flagging questions for further review. We also further built the pupil's verbal skills by reviewing vocabulary and working through a reading section."
