Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a session to study for her science midterm the next day. An hour wasn't quite enough time to go over all of the material her class has covered in detail, but I helped her with the main subjects that she was struggling with. I wish we had a bit more time to review everything, but in that time she got a better understanding of the major topics that she was having trouble with prior to our session."
"Discussed the summer reading, and provided a prompt for a timed essay on WWI based on the discussion. The essay was really very good, with only one confusing run-on sentence; otherwise impeccable grammar, spelling, etc. An impressive effort. He's already been assigned Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and Sophocles' Oedipus cycle, which is right up my alley; that should be fun."
"Introduced to the student. The parent's concern is his test scores, where they make up a significant part of his total grade, and he has been scoring around 60%. Asked him for copies of his tests from his teacher. Covered intro to sum of forces. May backtrack to projectile motion and kinematics."
"Today the student and I worked on the reading and math sections of the SAT. We went through the three reading sections and the three math sections of the practice test he did, going over all of the questions that he had missed. The we went over general tips and strategies based on the patterns of the questions that he missed, so that he will do better on the next practice test that he takes."
"The student and I reviewed strategies during our final SSAT tutoring session today. We started with a review of writing and reading strategies, and spent the bulk of our session working on synonym practice problems."
"I met with the student and talked with him to get to know him. I helped him with his homework by listening to him answer comprehension questions, and read a fluency passage. I had him read a list of basic sight words and noted the ones he missed or didn't know. I did a fluency check on a second grade passage to get a baseline reading rate."
"Physics, worked through the end of Chapter 6 and most of Chapter 7 both on rotational motion, torque, universal gravitational motion, moments of inertia, moving between translational and rotational motion."
"Today we did a worksheet that had some reading and cause and effect questions. Then we worked on a math word problem sheet. Then we did a division worksheet and finally played the dice game to end the session."
"The student and I went over her English packet for "Where the Red Fern Grows." We also looked up vocabulary terms for her History class. After that, we spent extensive time researching and preparing her science fair project report, data tables, and abstract."
"The student was excited that her last paper received a higher grade. This session we brainstormed possible paper topics and developed a basic outline and the bones of a thesis statement. We are meeting later this week to work on polishing her rough draft."
"The student had done a practice section of math. We went over it. Most of his errors were misreading related or problems he didn't think he could do, but with a little help connecting ideas he was able to. He did a practice English section that we then went over as well. Special emphasis on vocab study between our sessions."
"This is my last session with the student. We finished reviewing for his physics test, covering all subjects we did not get to on Saturday. These subjects included waves, sound, thermodynamics, electric fields, forces, and charges, and circuit analysis. He had done some studying outside of our sessions, and was already able to do very well solving these problem types. We reviewed additional material from the book and worked some additional problems. I expect he will do well on his final."
