"Today the student edited his final paper, which should be in great shape. He has a much better understanding of material and did a nice job writing."
"The student worked on homework problems for her federal tax course. She had specific areas of interests we worked on. For example, we compared and contrasted the differences among the three tax courts for the appeal process. We also outlined the differences among the three kinds of tax audits, including the scope and type of taxpayer. I explained to her the programs used by the IRS to determine who gets audited. We worked through a chapter of the textbook as well."
"We reviewed the student's homework assignment from Chapter 3: From a list of "year end" adjustments, create T charts, journal entries and now (as if an assignment). The student is doing the adj. trial balance, balance sheet, income statement and statement of retained earnings over the weekend for me to check on Tuesday. His class is on Thursday so sounds like we will be reviewing the assignment on the Friday meetings, with me checking his homework again on Tuesday before class. The student has on-line access to the book so I have the first two chapters of the book to review so next week we will go through chapter one on Tues and chapter two on Friday. The student is a portfolio manager doing stocks and bonds but all in Arabic. He has been doing it for 12 years now and while he knows this stuff well, he doesn't know it in English, nor does he know the nuts and bolts of American accounting practices. He knows the overview of the financial statements and such but not how the data gets into those places/spaces. I will be working as much on teaching him the "language game" of accounting as teaching him accounting."
