ACT Science Tutoring review by Rickey in Duluth, GA
We covered how to simplify questions that give sets of unordered numbers and a medium by ordering them. We covered ratios and how ratios are unitless and that's an advantage. We also covered how to convert ratios to fractions so we can use it as a conversion factor. We covered how to check answers to boost confidence by plugging in simple numbers for a variable and checking to see all the rules still apply. We learned ways to remember 30-60-90 triangle, filled vs open circle on an inequality number line, and ways to recognize FOIL. a2-b2, a3-b3, etc. We also covered tricks to minimize algebraic mistakes. The student's getting pretty good at trusting her instincts and going back to the question for more clues when she hits a roadblock. Next session, we will cover when to use factorials in a probability scenario.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Kate in Duluth, GA
We started the session with a longer form reading comprehension passage from the literary fiction genre. I had her try a new technique - jotting down a 2 or 3 word summary of each paragraph after reading it. This strategy helped her maintain focus as she read and also helped her navigate back through the text to look for specific details. She scored very well on her reading comprehension questions today, so I followed up with some more challenging passages. Following reading comprehension, I introduced a new type of grammar question that asks the student to not only identify, but also correct sentence errors. She found these types of questions challenging because the answer choices tended to be very similar. We went over strategies for answering these types of questions and did about 40 minutes of practice. By the end of the session, she was already answering most of the questions correctly. We will do some more practice next week. We spent the last few minutes of our session going over some new vocabulary words. I have sent these words to her and I will quiz her on them next week.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Jerry in Duluth, GA
Today we went over some SAT math problem-solving techniques. In the past I had given the student two tips: 1. NEVER use the calculator to set up the problem. The calculator is hurting rather than helping during the setup stage. She must be able to understand what's going on and what's being asked on a problem. 2. Proceed to calculations one step at a time. It may take 15 seconds to write down all the work, but it take minutes to check for errors when she gets an answer that's different from all the choices. Overall, she showed some improvements on doing both tips, which made me happy. She managed to do the first 9-10 questions within 30 minutes on the SAT, with a little or none of my help--which showed some improvements, compared with the diagnostic test. I went over some concepts that she missed with her, such as logics and contrapositives. She understood them fairly well. Good student, overall.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Terry in Duluth, GA
We used the first hour of session to work with social studies questions online. These were easier than what would be found on a revised GED, but I wanted him to have a positive session in this topic. The student did quite well with these. In our second hour we discussed questions in math. Again, these are easier questions than will be found on revised GED, but they are good for providing a review of basics and perhaps a morale boost. In next session we will resume higher difficulty efforts in math and other topics. The student is sticking with the effort well.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Ted in Duluth, GA
Today's class covered the following lessons involved with the assessment exam preparation. Last week, we started with the scrambled paragraph with some math practice. We continued with the logic portion of the verbal section with the second half of our session focused on the math portion. The logic section is a tricky section for most. In general, students who are initially exposed to this category tend to struggle. However, the student seems to show his strongest performance in this particular section. We still have a good amount to cover in the logic section, but he did an awesome job in grasping the day's lesson. In particular, we examined the "proper ordering and restrictive/nonrestrictive sections." During our second portion of our session, we reviewed the math homework that was issued to him from the previous week. This section, unlike the reading and logic sections was problematic. He performed the weakest when it came to the math portion. I feel that he simply did not learn these specific topics in school. The good news is that, once he is properly educated in the various math categories, he should not have a problem improving his abilities. He still has a significant amount of time to study before his exam. Therefore with proper preparation, we should be able to improve his math skills significantly.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Paige in Duluth, GA
We began the session with a practice English section of the ACT, because that is what she struggled most with on her last exam. She scored a 24 on this, a 2 point improvement from her previous score in this section. She seems to struggle most with confidence in this section, so we are going to keep practicing to help her feel more comfortable. We also did a practice Reading section. She struggled most with timing on this section, so we are going to work on that next week.
